Maurie McInnis, a longtime higher education leader and cultural historian, was named the 24th president of Yale University on Wednesday.

Before becoming president of Stony Brook University, McInnis was the dean of the Yale School of Drama from 2011 to 2016. She also served as the chair of the Department of Theater and Dance at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2006 to 2011.

In a statement, Yale Corporation Chairman William H. Beinecke said that McInnis is "a visionary leader with a deep commitment to academic excellence and a passion for the arts."

"Maurie McInnis is a brilliant and accomplished scholar, a gifted teacher, and a dedicated leader," Beinecke said. "She is also a person of great warmth and compassion, and we are confident that she will be an outstanding president of Yale University."
